Dan Uggla on Hanley Ramirez's $70 Million Dollar Contract (Circa May 2008)

No real signs of jealousy here...right?

"With the new stadium, we kind of figured they're going to make an effort to lock a few guys up," Uggla said. "They're starting with Hanley, and everybody's happy for Hanley. He's set for the rest of his life. Who knows what they're going to do now?

"I think it's a great move. He's going to be one of the best players in the game for a long time. He's a winner. It's really smart on their part."

Interesting.....

Thoughts?

I love how he says that Hanley is set for the rest of his life, as if $7MM for one season will leave him destitute and homeless should he have a career ending injury. The guy has $10MM net so far in his career, he's set for life too. Pretty much anybody that sticks in the majors long enough to taste arb. even one time is set for life. If he wants a better payday, stop striking out 150 times a year, stop hitting sub .270, stop being a malcontent, stop playing below average defense at the 3rd or 4th easiest position on the field, and stop being a one trick pony that can only hit homeruns. I used to want Uggla in Seattle and to find a place for him to play (probably his future is at 1B or DH), but not I just want him to end up on another team not named the Mariners, what a douchebag. He's now in that special category of player that makes you wish him to lose his ability to play professional baseball forever (i.e. Papelbon and the "I'm going to raise the bar for all the other closers out there and set the highest payday", as if being the 5th to 8th best closer in baseball would make that happen! Ha Ha Ha!)
