Chicago Cubs SP Carlos Zambrano will have his arm examined on Wednesday after experiencing the dreaded "discomfort" after his start in Houston today. Can't the Cubs ever get a break? they finally have an amazing team that oozes talent, but now as we come down the home stretch, the Cubs horse is coming up lame. What gives? Nineteen-Oh-Eight....
But in all seriousness, I think that the Cubs will be okay for now, even without Big Z. The Cubs are far enough ahead of the pack, which means that they can afford to rest Zambrano for a few weeks as long as his injury is not that serious. They also have some quality arms that can take the ball in Big Z's absence, namely Sean Marshall. The Cubs have a great bullpen, a fantastic offense, and quality starters (Lilly, Marquis, Dempster, Harden) to carry the burden if Zambrano cannot perform. The pressure will especially be on Harden to be the ace of the staff, a role that he has taken too so far during his time in a Cub uni.
But if Zambrano is out for the rest of the season, expect fans in Milwaukee, St. Louis, New York, Philadelphia, and Arizona to breathe a sigh of relief. Because even though Big Z's stats are not great (3.58 ERA), he is still a great pitcher and a guy that makes me nervous when I see his name listed as the next days starting pitcher.
